A beautiful young lady…

Misleading title?  Not at all; the name is right if a bit anglicised.  We call this, possibly the most striking of our native damselflies, the ‘Beautiful Demoiselle’.  But you need to be a bit relaxed about gender identity here because, despite the charming and quirky name, this is most definitely a male.

At this time of year the males defend a territory along the banks of sandy, stony streams and are seen, like this one, perched on stream side vegetation.  I know this because I was standing ankle deep in the stream watching and photographing this one.  Not too much of a hardship on a sunny day but I did squelch my way home.  I did try for a photo of this flying but a combination of their rather erratic flight and only patchy sunny spots through the canopy meant that this was just not going to be my day.

Given that this is the same small site where I’ve previously photographed these damselflies (less than 10’ from this one), it’s quite possible this is a descendant of those insects.  Small world.

Photographed with Nikon D500 and 300mm f/4E lens with TC-14iii teleconverter.  ISO 800, f/10 and 1/500s
