Little Egret

Little Egrets are a relatively recent coloniser in the UK.  I never saw one as a child and I can’t quite remember the first I saw in the UK but they have become steadily more common in the south of England to the point where they are a moderately common sight on many ponds or waterways.  I now see a few over our local wildlife reserve (a very large pond and woodland.

Yesterday I managed to get my first decent photos on one flying.  They are, like many herons, shy and not to keen to approach closely.  Their pure white plumage also makes taking a good photograph difficult and you need the ‘right’ lighting to get their feathers really showing well. Yesterday, a bright and fine spring morning with a faulty low sun gave just the right conditions.
